Come join fellow GSDA members for interesting, lively, and fun discussions about the latest in food, nutrition, and health. This year the GSDA Book Club will be reading three books for CEU credit that examine diet fads, the gut microbiome, and the shaping of food habits.

Our first meeting will discuss “The Gluten Lie” by Alan Levinovitz, who explores how we came to be scared of so many foods, how the Doctor Oz’s of the world contribute to our diet woes, and shows us how we can stop being afraid of food.

WHERE: Third Place Books; “The Pub”

CEUs: You will earn 1-2 CEU’s for this event

RSVP: Please email David Weinman at davidweinmanrd@gmail.com to confirm your attendance or ask any follow up questions.

THE BOOK TOPICS

1) The Gluten Lie – 6:30 pm Tuesday November 14, 2017, The Pub at Ravenna Third Place Books

In “The Gluten Lie”, Alan Levinovitz examines our current villains of the American diet—gluten, salt, sugar, and fat—or so a host of doctors and nutritionists would have you believe. But the science is far from settled and we are racing to eliminate wheat and corn syrup from our diets because we’ve been lied to. The truth is that almost all of us can put the buns back on our burgers and be just fine. Remember when butter was the enemy? Now it’s good for you. You may have lived through times when the Atkins Diet was good, then bad, then good again; you may have wondered why all your friends cut down on salt or went Paleo; and you might even be thinking about cutting out wheat products from your own diet. For readers suffering from dietary whiplash, “The Gluten Lie” is the answer. To combat our whiplash, Levinovitz takes on bestselling physicians and dietitians, exposing the myths behind how we come to believe which foods are good and which are bad—and pointing the way to a truly healthful life, free from anxiety about what we eat.

2) Missing Microbes – January 2018

In “Missing Microbes”, Dr. Martin J. Blaser invites us into the wilds of the human microbiome, where for hundreds of thousands of years bacterial and human cells have existed in a peaceful symbiosis that is responsible for the equilibrium and health of our bodies. Now this invisible Eden is under assault from our overreliance on medical advances including antibiotics and caesarian sections, threatening the extinction of our irreplaceable microbes and leading to severe health consequences. Taking us into the lab to recount his groundbreaking studies, Blaser not only provides elegant support for his theory, he guides us to what we can do to avoid even more catastrophic health problems in the future.

3) First Bite – April 2018

In “First Bite”, food writer Bee Wilson draws on the latest research from food psychologists and neuroscientists to reveal that our food habits are shaped by a host of factors: family and culture, memory and gender, hunger and love. Taking the reader on a journey across the globe, Wilson introduces us to people who can only eat foods of a certain color, an anosmia sufferer who has no memory of the flavor of her mother’s cooking, and researchers who have pioneered new ways to persuade children to try new vegetables. An exploration of the surprising origins of our tastes, “First Bite” shows us how we can change our palates to lead healthier, happier lives.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
