Do you know how to manage Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS)? SBS is a significant risk for malnutrition and dehydration, which makes it a concern for dietitians. Plus, the many possible causes range from acute trauma and birth defects to chronic disease. Therefore, a dietitian has to know their nutritional physiology to help patients manage their short bowel syndrome. Luckily, Lucy Ledezma, MS, RD, CNSC, has experience and insight into the dietitian’s role in SBS management.

Lucy will clarify how to monitor patients with SBS, including useful lab values and nutrition support. In addition, she’ll share how dietitians help those with SBS stay hydrated, well supplemented, and as symptom-free as possible. Nutrition therapy is vital for SBS, so you won’t want to miss out!

Lucy is a registered dietitian and CNSC. She is a field medical educator for Takeda Pharmaceuticals, where she focuses on the short bowel syndrome therapeutic area. Prior to joining Takeda, she worked in a variety of clinical settings from outpatient to inpatient trauma, as well as research. Lucy has a Master’s degree in nutrition and exercise physiology from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is currently a doctoral student at Rutgers University, where she is studying for her doctorate in clinical nutrition.

Lucy lives in Orange County, California with her husband and two children, aged 4 and 1.5. She enjoys running and other outdoor activities and is an active ultra runner who has run 5 races of more than 100 miles, including a 200-mile race around the Tahoe Rim Trail.
